Will These Simple Mistakes Ruin Your Car Accident Case?

After you’ve been in a car accident and you have a claim in the works, it’s important to pay attention to what you do and what you say in order to protect your rights and best interests. Don’t make these simple mistakes that could compromise your car accident claim.

Making Social Media Posts

One of the most harmful things you can do in a car accident claim is post about the crash on social media. You may think your accounts are protected, but in today’s world where just about everyone is on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, you can count on the other party’s insurance companies working hard to get information from your social media accounts. Some insurance companies even create fake accounts and “friend” accident victims on Facebook. Unbeknownst to the victim, the insurance company then has access to everything they’ve posted online.

Even if you’re not posting about the accident itself, talking about simple things like getting all your housework done for the day or posting pictures of you and your kids at the park could give the insurance companies enough evidence to say you aren’t injured enough to be compensated. If you’ve been in a crash, try to stay off of social media until your claim is resolved.

Talking to Anyone But Your Attorney About Your Case

The other party’s team of lawyers and insurance adjusters will undoubtedly be contacting you in an attempt to get a statement from you. It may sound harmless at first; they may simply ask how you’re feeling. Like most people, you might respond, “I’m fine, thanks.” While you might mean you feel much better after taking your prescribed pain medication and sleeping for several hours, insurance adjusters and attorneys for the other side will take this to mean you are literally fine and not injured at all. Never talk to anyone but your attorney about your case, and if anyone contacts you with questions, direct them to your attorney right away.
